Reliable Overhead Power Isolation
with Air Break Switches

All overhead power transmission lines require an Air Break Switch (ABS) primarily used for on/off switching of a specific section of overhead line or transformer from the main distribution line.

This critical component enables isolation of a section of the overhead wire without disrupting the remaining power transmission system, ensuring safety and maintenance efficiency .

Reliable Isolation with Air Break Switches (ABS) Disconnectors

The Air Break Switch (ABS) is a crucial component in all overhead power transmission lines , primarily used to connect or disconnect (on/off switching) specific sections of overhead lines and transformers from the main distribution network.

This feature enables users to isolate a faulty segment of the wire without disrupting the remaining power transmission system , making the isolation process simple, reliable, and effective for maintenance and protection.

Air Break Switches (ABS) – Overhead Line Isolation & Sectionalizing

Air Break Switches are essential for overhead transmission and distribution networks. They provide on/off switching and sectionalizing to isolate specific line segments or transformers without interrupting the wider system supporting fast fault clearance, safe maintenance and operational flexibility.

We design and supply gang-operated triple-pole ABS for outdoor applications, suitable for switching transformers, overhead lines and cables on distribution systems.

Purpose & Operation

Air Break Switch Disconnectors enable isolation of a defined overhead line section through a sequence of switching operations without disrupting the rest of the network.

  • Sectionalize feeders and isolate faults quickly
  • Provide visible isolation points for safe work
  • Facilitate maintenance and network reconfiguration

Construction & Actuation

Standard designs are triple-pole, gang-operated for synchronized phase operation in outdoor environments.

  • Manual operation via handle/ratchet or insulated hook-stick
  • Outdoor duty: substation yard, pole-top, or pad-mounted enclosures
  • Suited for transformers, overhead lines and cable switching

Types of Air Break Switches

Available as single-pole and gang-operated three-pole configurations to match system design and operating practice.

  • Single-Pole ABS (independent pole control)
  • Gang-Operated ABS (simultaneous 3-phase switching)

Mounting & Installation

Configurable to suit network topology and available structure types.

  • Vertical or horizontal mounting
  • Pole-top, substation structure or pad-mounted steel enclosure
  • Outdoor application as the primary use case

Voltage & Current Ratings

Rated for medium-voltage distribution systems with ample current capacity for feeder and transformer switching.

  • Voltage: 12 kV to 36 kV
  • Current: up to 1250 A

Materials & Insulation

Built for durability and dielectric performance in outdoor conditions.

  • Ceramic, polymeric, porcelain, and cycloaliphatic components
  • Corrosion-resistant metalwork and hardware

Applications

Used wherever switching or isolation of MV circuits is required.

  • Between cables and transformers; transformers and conductors
  • Power generation export lines and distribution feeders
  • Critical points for rapid fault isolation

Benefits

Improve safety, reliability and maintainability of the network.

  • Visible isolation; supports safe work practices
  • Rapid sectionalizing stabilizes the network after faults
  • Overcurrent/short-circuit protection coordination
  • High reliability, low maintenance, easy serviceability
